If Cesare Borgia did not directly rule Italy, then I would love to know how much of an influence he had on the country.

Cesare Borgia (September 13, 1475 – March 12, 1507), Duke of Valentinois, and Romagna, Prince of Andria and Venafro, Count of Dyois, Lord of Piombino, Camerino and Urbino, Gonfalonier and Captain-General of Holy Church , was a Spanish-Italian condottiero, lord and cardinal. He was the son of Pope Alexander VI, and Vannozza dei Cattanei, sibling to Lucrezia Borgia and Giovanni Borgia, duke of Gandia, and half-brother to Don Pedro Luis de Borja and Girolama de Borja, children of unknown mothers.

It can not be said that he ruled Italy as it was a group of city states and oligarchies independent from each other. He did for some time hold the titles mentioned above and was an infamous warlord. While his father, the Pope was alive he had tremendous influence. The death of his father ended his own career. Gravely ill at the time that his father died in 1503, he was seized and imprisoned by his political enemies, led by Pope Julius II. Exiled to Spain, in 1504, he escaped from a Spanish prison two years later and joined his brother-in-law, King John III of Navarre. In his service, Cesare died at the siege of Viana in 1507, at the age of thirty-one.

Check out this link:

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Cesare_Borgia

There is a biography there and some links to additional reading.

If you want some stylized fiction about the Borgia family check out the Book By Mario Puzo, yes the writer of The Godfather, it is a wonderful read. It is fiction, kinda a book about how it could have been, maybe.

You should also research Lucrezia, his sister. Some twisted stuff went down back then. It gets deep and crazy. Though it is historically factual that the family had a large amount of influence and I respect your desire to learn more.
