It kind of bugs me too, given the France bashing that began when they opposed us going into Iraq. So many people said things like, "France would be Germany right now if it wasn't for us," and "how dare they speak out against us, we saved their butts in WWII, they owe us loyalty because of that."

The USA wouldn't exist if it weren't for the French. Pivotal battles in the Revolution were only won because of French troops, and the service of men like Lafayette and Rochambeau. Somehow, we've re-written the history even of our own beginnings to justify our actions in the Middle East.

France acted as a true friend, when we were about to embark on a disastrous course of action. They spoke out, tried to get us to see, and refused to help us do something that was plainly wrong. Add that to the help they gave us to become a nation to begin with.

Hopefully, with the general re-emergence of interest in facts, finally, now that it's become evident how badly we've screwed up in Iraq, we'll make an effort to remember our own history the way it really happened.

We didn't, he is in our history books, there are buildings and streets name after him. I even have ancestor with the middle name of Lafayette. He did help us become an independent country. But the French must realize that we do not owe them anything after bailing them out in WW1 and WW2. Also they owe us millions of dollars for aid that we gave them. And the French have forgotten that they are not a world power and haven;t been for a long time. God Bless the USA

Perhaps Americans feel that we paid France back by helping win WW 1, WW 2 and the Cold War.

Without us the French would be speaking German or Russian.

There are many cities and monuments named for Lafayette. I'm not sure where the current hate wave came from for the French.
Many of the negative things I see in here seem to be people parroting things they have seen/heard in the ultra-right press.

Our school system is more of a babysitting service nowadays. Unfortunately, people generally only remember what happened within their own lifetimes. Even I. For a moment, I thought you meant the pirate, Jean Lafitte. It's been so long, I don't even remember the spelling.

Lafayette has never been forgotten. We owed Lafayette and that's why General Pershing paid homage to him when he entered Paris during World War I and said. "Lafayette, nous sommes arrives!"
