Lead by example by not being afraid to pitch in and get your hands dirty. I've never respected a boss more than when they don't ask subordinates to do anything they're not willing to do themselves. It's not something you have to do constantly, but a leader who will get down in the trenches is always respected.

I worked at a college and a computer glitch meant that grade mailers would have to be done by hand and the registrar got down in the floor with all of us and stuffed envelopes until 1a.m. Also, when he delegated tasks we were always rewarded with appreciation if not something tangible.

Treating others the way you'd like to be treated sounds very trite, but it truly works, both in the work place and at home.

Ok. A leader is a person who knows how to take control and have confidence. I will be a leader when I feel I can handle it. However, I know when it's best to be a follower.

This sounds like a question they'd feature. :)

Serve others whom you lead. The more you serve them, the more they will look up to you as a leader and they will be more willing to follow you.

Depends on who you are leading, how many and for what purpose. Generally speaking it is not the person that wants to be in charge but the least selfish most hard-working and trustworthy person. They usually don't get put in charge but they are great when they do.

a good leader is a follower in disguise, he finds what his people want by being one of them and acts accordingly, not on his own ideas but on the consensus of his followers.
