I want to grow my plants in my garden, not the gobs of old clover and other plants prior owners had. Other than "roundup" (not option cuz its poison), what can i do? Salt, plastic sheet, what??

The plastic sheeting is a good idea.
DON'T USE SALT!! Nothing will grow in that spot ever again!

Ha ha, salt. Salt will kill some thing. because you're in reality replacing the soil besides, i don't think of it truly is going to result the compost, see you later as you get rid of all of that salty dirt.

dig up all of the old plants ,and make sure to get the bulbs of the plants as well!other wise they'll come back!then till up,or dig up the dirt really well!and plant your new plants!some might return,that's if seeds or bulbs from the old plant are unknowingly left behing but when you see them youll know where to dig them up!

You could burn them, of course that depends on the size of your garden. Or you could simply pull them up yourself.
