Your idea for the halter dress with a little cardigan or shrug sounds spot on. You can remove it after the ceremony, before the reception. Just make sure the dress is not too sexy. Any type of nice sundress would be appropriate. Go for soft, pastel colors that flatter your skin tone. Nothing skin tight, too low cut or too short. Avoid white, for obvious reasons. Black would be more appropriate for a formal wedding. The idea is not to outshine the bride even at a backyard wedding.
Since you say the dress will be plus size please, please, please invest in a great bra if you choose to go the halter route. There is nothing worse than a plus size woman with little or no foundation garments. You can wear anything the smaller women wear, you just have to make sure you don't look sloppy and unkempt.

Yep, black is out. In the old days, a woman in mourning wore black to all formal occasions for one year after the death of her husband and that was acceptable and expected.
As it is September, why not a smart pant suit? Salmon would be a nice colour. A halter dress with a cardigan wouldn't be too informal if it is a backyard ceremony. Dress it up with a snazzy handbag and maybe a silk scarf tied loosely around your neck. GL!

Im plus size and i shop in monsoon for those special occassion outfits. I would never go too casual to a wedding, even if it is casual. A dress is a good idea, keep it simple though. no frills and stuff like that for us big girls.
find out what colours the bride/bridemaids/groom are wearing and try not to clash....Also, have a look at the flowers and try complementing these colours.
I would never wear black and white to a wedding. but you can wear colour with colour: black with purple, black with brown, black with navy blue... im sure you get the drift.
goodluck with finding this outfit, and have fun at the wedding.

Well since its very casual and in the background. I agree I think a halter with a cardigan would be very nice. Heres a couple of sites that you could look at:
Lane Bryant- www.lbcatalog.com
Avenue-www.avenue.com
www.torrid.com
www.fashionbug.com
Also you could try dress pants.

I would be looking for the dress now. Stores are already changing over clothes to winter things. Your idea is best of the dress with jacket or cardigan.
Plus size clothes can be found both in stores and online. Places like Lane Bryant and Chadwick's of Boston have plus size catalogs. I think JC Penney might as well.

i would go with the halter dress & light cardigan in a nice summery color. definitely get cute shoes & jewelry. but don't wear white (to overshadow the bride) or black because not only would it be hot but it's not considered appropriate to weddings, even though people do it all the time.

Check out Torrid.com for plus sizes and I think the halter dress with a little sweater would be perfect. Make sure you get cute accessories too, and just be sure that you pick out cute and comfy shoes. Also, go with fall time colors. If they suit your skin and hair. I think you are on the right track.

It depends on the type of wedding and the time of year. The main thing is to dress respectfully and not to overshadow the bride or her maids.
Usually a nice dress; not a prom gown but dress you would wear to a summer dance is fine. Slacks/skirt and blouse is ok as long as its not overly casual. Never wear denim or t-shirts.
