check that the security features are real - the Bank of England have a great site for checking the authenticity of the £50 note: http://www.bankofengland.co.uk/banknotes/security/security_50.htm

get a piece of white paper and rub it accross the coloured shape (cant remeber which shape for a fifty bu think its pink) some dye should come off, then check for the water mark and make a little tear where the silver is it should run through the note.

Take a piece of plain white paper and rub it over the red triangle on the front. The ink should transfer; if it doesn't double check everything else.

Hold it up to the light. There should be a flattened wasp holding a silver strip.

set fire to it and see what colour flame it burns with!
If it burns orange, it was probably real!
