Just wondering if anyone had any tips on where to start looking for actual proof of Native American bloodlines?

I'm not sure if you're Canadian or American, as ways (from a legal standpoint) to find out differ between countries. There are several ways you can start. Ask relatives if they know anything - someone may have some info you don't know about. You could also apply for native status - you will need to provide info on your family tree, about you, your parents, grandparents and great-grandparents; their birth and death dates and locations, and dates and locations of marriage. You should be able to get appropriate forms for application from your local government office - check your phone book's yellow pages.

A surefire way to find out is to get your DNA tested. There are certain markers in DNA fingerprints that indicate various ethnic backgrounds. It is very expensive though - in Canada it's around $600 I believe.

Good luck!

first you need to trace your ancestors and if you have any stories from your grandparents that have been about having a native person in the family. you need to check around with them. then you need to take your last name and look it up on the dawes rolls.( just type that into google or yahoo and you will find it, ) then type in your last name and see if you recognize any names on there. you also need to know where your ancestors came from which part of the country that is always helpful as to what tribe you might have come from. good luck i hope this helps.

you can try doing research on your family tree. check local newspapers arcives for marriage/birth announcements and then research those names, sometimes city halls will also have those records. there are also geneology websites and services but those usually charge fees.
