The tower just keeps making a noise like it is doing something but it is not. Just takes a while to open any application or on the internet.

There are many reasons for a computer to slow down. Defrag really helps. Scandisk was my favorite, but there are other programs that might be installed already on your computer that work better. Your computer might spend a lot of time checking out fragmented or broken files.

Go to task manager and make sure you are not running more than about 50-60 processes if possible. If your hard drive is getting full, then you might consider dumping files or adding a second hard drive and copying files off of the first to the second one.

Newer programs take more rom and ram memory. If you are adding a lot of new programs to you computer, you may have to consider increasing your ram. 256 ram is not so good anynmore, 512 is passable, 1 gig is good.

Viruses, adware and other malicious code can be running in the background dragging your speed down considerably. A good anit-virus program might really help, in more ways than one.

If your computer is a couple years old and the clockspeed is not very high, may be time for a new computer.

sounds you hear are prob. the hard drive either searching for something (did you lately use 'search?) or it's trying to reorg. some files. whatever ya do, take it in steps; doing too much at once can really get things fouled.
on XP you might try to cold boot and hit F8 key til you get the black screen; from here hi lite the 'safe mode' and enter; this will start windows in a minimum config. (no extra things running.) now from the admin. account you can do the scans, defrag's, and file management actions. remember: after each activity has ended, open the 'system tools>system restore>create a save point. this will at least give you a place to get back to. post cleaning, try a regular cold boot to your regular user acct.

These symtoms sound like Spyware and Memory issues.

Spyware can be removed using two powerful programs:

1. Adaware:
http://www.download.com/Ad-Aware-SE-Personal-Edition/3000-8022_4-10045910.html?part=dl-ad-aware&subj=dl&tag=top5

2. Spybot Search and Destroy:
http://www.safer-networking.org/en/mirrors/index.html

The other issue could be your amount of installed memory: You don't have enough. Try installing more (it WILL help)

Finally, you could have a virus. Try AVG Antivrius from Grisoft: it's powerful AND free.

IDEAL SOLUTION: Do a complete reinstall of Windows, formating the hard drive. This will in effect start you out better than factory fresh. Make sure you back up all work and files you want to save, and make sure you have software (Word, etc) dics handy to reinstall.

You can try cleaning up your registry and run some spyware software to remove any type of spywares. Try also to run a defrag on your drives and if you have any virus tool, it might be a good time to run it to see if there is any viruses on you pc.

Computer Slow

Download and then run startup.exe (FREEWARE) at:

http://www.mlin.net/startupcpl.shtml......

Can't live without it and windows...

Then disable and/or uninstall whatever u don't need.

Other things to try:

1 - Disk Cleanup (removal of temp files, cookies, etc.)
2 - Defrag
3 - Registry Cleanup (CAN BE VERY RISKY!)

ALL ELSE FAILS - RELOAD YOUR O/S (WINDOWS) AND THEN REINSTALL ALL OTHER PROGRAMS YOU NEED/USE!
