Career, family, etc. strains. They were too stressed-out with work & stuff to keep their marriage. I have an "I Love Lucy" 50th anniversary book that says:
"Sadly, the stresses of business, personal, and family life grew too difficult for the Arnaz marriage, and in 1962, one of the world's most popular couples was divorced."
C'est la vie.

On the Lucy show, she did not play the same character. She played a character named Lucille McGillicutty, who was always running afoul of the bank president, Mr. Mooney. When she was done with Desi, she was done with Ricky.
