The tub spins, but not at the high speed it should for the cycle I used. Some water is drained, but when the spin cycle is done I can still squeeze a lot of water from a piece of clothing. It is an older model Kenmore.

We have a new machine in storage. If it gets too expensive to fix this one I'll just have the new one brought to the house.

If its not the belts, or the motor, check the water pump. something could be caught in it. Those old Kenmore machine were good machine. And easy to work on, just go to Sears and get the part you needed put it on there and all was well. With the newer ones its different. Good luck.

Every time I have an appliance repair problem, the first place I go to is the library. The larger the library the better. You will find that there is a section there that has to do with repair of applicances, and in particular washers and dryers. These handly books will give your pictures and diagrams and a troubleshooting guide. If you have trouble with the spin cycle, it will have a section on that and it will tell you what to check. And if that's where the problem is, it will give you enough information to fix it yourself, if you have some basic mechanical skills. You may have buy a few parts the your local appliance parts store, but installing them is not as complex as you might think.

Check the belt - it may be worn and is slipping. Hopefully that is the case as it is easy and cheap to fix. You may also want to check the tub very carefully as there could be a small piece of clothing (like a sock) stuck between the inner and outer tub. Anything beyond that could get expensive and you now have to weigh the cost of repairing an old machine to the cost of a new one.

I would have to say... check the belts first to make sure they are not slipping. If it is cracked or really hot, not just warm, then I would replace that. It is the cheapest first step. After that... it's most likely the windings in the motor... the only cure is to replace it. it's not difficult if you pay attention to how you take out the old one.
