Everyone I work with has a different meaning to the ending.....

If I recall the movie correctly... Don Johnson kills the girl and he and the dog live happily ever after.

I think the meaning is to not let lust/sex break up a true friendship.

the dog gets to eat, the book is much better than the movie, pick it up if you can.
