Babies recognize their mother's voice before they are even born, and if the father was around a lot during the pregnancy, they will recognize him too. As for smiling, for the first couple of months, babies will smile because of gas, but around 2 or 3 months, they will start to smile to show happiness.

A 7 week old baby CAN smile for real. My son was born Sept 10th and smiled a real smile by Oct 24th. Up until then it was due to gas. She may not recognize you as mommy and daddy yet though. She does know you by your smell and the fact that you're always around to take care of her. She won't make the connection of who you are until 8 to 9 months. And don't be offended when she says "Dada" first. It's easier to pronounce. Don't worry, "Mama" will follow soon after!

Babies smile with purpose at around 6 weeks. So if your 7 week old baby is smiling, then yes it is for real. Babies recognize the shape of their parents face and other features in the first few weeks. They recognize their mother's voice before they are even born.
* I've seen several people write down 3 months is when a social smile begins, but that is not correct. I evaluate baby's development for a living and it begins at 6-7 weeks for sure. Up until then it's just a reflux. To know for sure lay your baby down and start smiling at her. If she smiles back then you'll know.

Babies can recognize their mother very early, especially if you are breastfeeding. I read a study that a breastfed infant recognizes their mom by armpit smell alone! :) As for the smiling, usually about 3 months. At the point you are at its considered a reflex, but I liked to think my son was smiling at me anyway! Good Luck with your Angel!

2 months -- Recognizes both parents
3 Months -- Smiles non-stop
8 Months -- Says "Da Da!"

Okay frist off she always knows who mommy is. You carried her for 9 months for gods sake. Shes known who you were since birth. More then likely she knows who her daddy is. She just needs that bonding time with him for a little while everyday and she'll know who her daddy is.

i think it's whatever you take it as.. My daughter rarely had smiles until she was almost 6 months old, but I saw a 2 1/2 month old this weekend that whenever you played peek-a-boo, she smiled.
