It's an old practice in the Roman Catholic Church. Many followers kiss a Bishop's ring. The Pope is the Vicar of Rome, or the Bishop of Rome, so they do the same thing. It was a sign of respect for the position.
I would have to agree with you about it being ridiculous, at least in our times, given the behavior of many of the clerics in the Roman Church and the Church's complete disregard for the victims of those clerics.

--is Catholic--
It is old tradition to signify obedience and homage. The ring that is kissed is the ring that is used to seal official documents. Kissing of the ring is to the position and the authority of that position, not per-say to the man. This practice would also occur with kings and princes.
St. Peter is referred to as the Prince of the Apostles and the Pope holds the authority of St. Peter and is thus the temporal ruler of the Church.

I think that the Pope watched to many Godfather movies and thought, hey I would like people to kiss my ring too. Maybe he gets some power off people having to suck up to him, who knows.

It is kind of dumb, but wouldn't you rather kiss the Pope's ring than Bush's a** like a lot of people are doing?

I guess to show respect, it seems to me they are worshipping the man and no the one who created the man - God.
