I should point out that I do have sleep apnea and I workout on a regular basis, so I don't get a good nights rest no matter what time I go to bed.

And I'm off caffeine per doctors orders.

Vitamin B-12. It kept me awake AND alert through graveyard shift at my job and a class the next morning. I went an entire course of 2 days with only 5 hours sleep! Even the next day the consequences weren't bad (I slept about 2 hours more than usual and then I was back in regular shape).
AND it's all natural. I highly recommend it.

And it makes your tinkle look like yellow powerade!

Have you tried apples?

An apple is as good as a cup of coffee for a morning or mid-day pick-me-up - apple juice if you don't like to munch. You can get fancy and blend an apple with Ice chips and yogurt - it makes a refreshing little drink that will give you a boost between meals. Here are some nutritional facts you may wish to peruse... http://www.urbanext.uiuc.edu/apples/nutrition.html

The other obvious answer is Tea... hot or cold, but you won't be avoiding caffeine if you go this way.

And... just for fun ..look at this pick-me-up recipe; (and guess what ... it includes apple juice.)

Have fun, bright eyes.

I went through a phase where I really became dependent on caffeine to stay awake at work, then one day I started to drink water throughout the day. I found that staying hydrated helped me feel fresh & somewhat recharged, rather than caffeine which eventually just made me feel sluggish after I stopped drinking it.

regular exercise, drink enough water, eat at least 5 times a day, try a guarana supplement or yerba mate supplement (I would recomment tea but it tastes yukky)
water does most of the trick, as I recall... try to drink at least 3 litres per day.

Stay hydrated. Drinking water is nearly as effective as drinking caffine. Most people are chronically dehydrated anyway.
