People are sometimes afraid that others wouldn't like or accept who they really are. They think that to fit in, they should be "cool." This is a very insecure, low self-esteem position for them, especially because people are so fickle. Being your own person is by far the steadier, safer, better course.

In my perspective, we all are a lil fake and a lil insecure.
None of us are wanting to show the world our exact thoughts and feelings; and we all wonder whether the world will accept us.
PEOPLE, who seem unecesarily fake are hiding their insecurities. they have unhealed wounds in their past, wounds of rejection and unacceptance!
They are usually IN DENIAL that they are totally fake and not showing up their original self. They just try to be what they think is socially presentable and acceptable, and not what they feel.
In some period of time, they tend to get disillusioned with who they are and what they want in life.
They have such a deep feeling of insecurity that they usually manipulate others to get dependant on them. They love the feeling of being the centre of someone elses life, of being their core and their everything. They only gather self esteem through the people who have high regards for them. Mostly, such a person does land in high regard of others, until others too realise of how fake the person is!!!
They are deeply troubled individuals, and need professional help!
... Yes, its always advisable to be intouch and interms with your feelings and opinions rather than disappearing into others!

Some people cannot handle rejection or lack of acceptance. They cannot handle being put down or proved wrong because they think it is a sign of weakness and that somehow they would be vulnerable to more personal attacks, so its easier to live a lie and be someone they think will be accepted by society and their peers.
I think its good to be yourself and find you place in the world where you can be happy being who you are. With that said, there are some core ethics and values that have to be a part of "being yourself". You should never be dishonest or present yourself falsely. Don't steal, cheat or lie or kill. Then I guess its ok to be yourself.

everyone has different personalities and backgrounds... they shape us to become who we are... while some people are stronger and can deal with situations, others can't... i suppose it can be irritating, but there's always a reason for their behavior... for example, if someone had a traumatic childhood and couldn't trust anyone, would you expect them to be normal and secure? Or if a person has eating disorder issues that stem from major self esteem problems, can you expect them to be honest about themselves?

You surely have lost sight of a couple of matters, society/tradition is in which persons opt for solutions to questions concerning persons and ethnicities;Religion and Spirituality is in which each person opt for subjects concerning that area topic, I do not discover that unusual in any respect.
