No one is absolutely certain, but Leprechaun legends have been in Ireland for nearly a thousand years. Ireland has many legends of special fairy like creatures like the Banshee, the Pooka, Leprechauns and even some darker critters like early werewolves. My personal opinion is that the Irish have always been very creative, and told these stories as bedtime stories to their children, and it just "took". Unless they really do exist........

Leprechaun means a spirit or pigmy. They belong with the faerie folk in irish mythology. Leprechauns are ill-natured and mischievous, with a mind for cunning. Some believe that they guard gold. Others believe that they are a shoemaker. Some believe that leprechauns are elves.

Leprachauns ..and fairies go back to pagan times in Ireland ...when people who lived off the land had little or no education and had to find reasons why their crops failed ...usually because they believed the fairies of the different seasons ..and how do you know the Leprachaun(who was supposedly any height from 6-12 inches) and fairies don't still exist ?....can anyone prove it?

You should go to blockbuster and go to the family section and rent Darby O'Gill and the Little People. That will explain EVERYTHING.
