Even if I wasn't interested in fantasy, yes, I would probably read it in interest of the writer. (Then again, I went to a SMALL school and only graduated with about 40 people, so I guess we got to know each other a bit better.)

If you yourself are an aspiring writer, you may not want to read it out of jealousy. You may fear that lightning may not strike twice, that all of the good luck in commercial publishing is dried up in your corner of the planet. In such case, I say read it with a jaundiced eye. Read it to see how very bad it is and to reassure yourself how much better you could do yourself.
If such is not the case, and if the author was a friend or even an enemy, read it for a glimpse inside her soul. And read it to see if you are mentioned.
Aside from the above, I struggle to think of any other reasons to read a fantasy novel. Good God!

Probably. Fantasy isn't my typical genre, but I would read it to see what they are capable of. And to be polite.
