I had a lisp for about a week. I loved my piercing, but I had to take it out after 3 years because one day I noticed ... I don't know how to describe it... ditches? channels? on my teeth. I didn't play with the piercing that much, but when I saw it was wearing down my teeth I immediately took it out.
Like I said, I loved it, and I would probably repeat the experience, but honestly, its been 4 years since I've had it out, and when I get sick, the hole in my tongue still gets sore, and once in awhile my tongue gets swollen. I've talked to others that had theirs pierced and they have the same experience!
... My brother has his nipple pierced and loves it, and I like it too . Tongue piercings are obviously the best, but nipple piercings have fewer lasting after effects, and for women, historically, its actually something they would do with inverted nipples, because piercing the nipple enhances breast feeding!
Anyway whatever you decide, good luck, but stay with plastic balls on the piercings, or rubber, because they'll damage your teeth less (although they get stinky so you have to use listerine EVERY DAY!)

If you have a couple of tattoos then getting your tongue pierced will be nothing. I have had mine for about 11 years and nothing has gone wrong. What they do is have you rinse with listerine, stick your tongue out, pat it with a tissue to make it dry, mark it where the needle is going to go through on the top and bottom of your tongue to make sure it will be straight, then they tell you to take a deep breath and when you exhale they push the needle into your tongue, and put the barbell into your tongue while pushing the needle out. It swells up for about a week but after that all is fine.
Just make sure you eat before because you wont be able to eat a lot during the first week. Things you will be able to eat are really soft foods, and small pieces.
If you want to get it done go for it, you can always take it out if you dont like it. Its not forever like a tattoo.

Not as bad as you think it will, and it heals a lot faster if you keep it clean. Be sure to rinse with Listerine every time you put something in your mouth besides water. It will be sore while your tongue and jaw get used to the extra weight, but it should never be painful. Also, expect it to migrate after the first 5 years or so. And don't roll it around on your teeth, because it can cause micro-fractures in the enamel resulting in sensitive teeth. Other than that, it really doesn't hurt that much--I'd say go for it.

i had the same problem you did! I had 3 tattoos and wanted something more so I went and got my tongue pierced, it was good times. It doesn't hurt all that bad your tongue just swells up real bad and you talk funny so if you want to hide it take vacation or something. The effects are worth it they don't last that long and tongue rings are good times :0)

The piercing didn't hurt as bad as the bill for the crown I had to get when the piercing cracked my tooth, $600. I loved it, but if you are really into piercing something stay away from your mouth.
