I'm wondering because two roads near me are named after the last name of two families in my geneology.

The naming of roads varies a little by the local rules, but generally streets are named by those who first subdivide an area. They could use family names or names to add to the prestige of the community.

If you check with the county they can usually show you the history of the land titles in the area. You can deternine who were the owners that developed the property.

Roads are usually named arbitrarily, and if your family has been in the area for a long time, then they may be named for them.

Go to your local library or county records center to look up old building records. You should be able to find building permits or plans for the houses on the street. You can also check city directories to find out when the houses were first occupied. Then, research your local neighborhood around the time when the houses were built to see if there are any articles about the contruction. Or, if it's been more recent, call the building company to ask if they have any records on it.

You could also call your city planning department and ask them if they know why the streets were named as they were.
