indeed it is imp to classify US vs world...so whats happening on broadway, is Lion King still going on...or any new imp entires?

I think Richard Greenberg and Tony Kushner will be remembered as the important playwrights of our decade. Tony Kushner mostly for Angels in America, and Richard Greenberg for the way he uses language.

Interesting question, but it's a little fuzzy. "Recent times" needs further clarification. And, are we talking about American theatre, or world theatre?

In any event, I think that a couple of writers who definitely belong in the conversation have already been mentioned here.

So far as the domestic product is concerned, I'd also like to submit the name of Sam Shepard. His major works ("Buried Child," "Fool for Love," "A Lie of the Mind," etc.) have been enormously influential.

hmm.. well Shakespeare will always take the cake but for more recent playwrites, umm John Larson, and Stephen Schwartz.
