What in particular is ANY good about Taking Back Sunday? They are poor instrumentalists, VERY poor singers, and their songs sound repetitive. Hardly good stuff.

This isn't just an attempt to anger TBS fans; I'm wondering what appeal this kind of band can have and if there's something they're actually good at that I'm just missing.

Bahamadude: You have it so right. I am obviously flamboyantly gay, because only TBS fans have the burly manliness that is essential to being straight.

Re: Addict for dramatics

*Good* lead singer? Excuse me, but he sounds like his vocal training consisted of repeatedly throwing up in a toilet bowl.

Being a TBS fan, I harbor no hard feelings for your question. In fact, I admire that you ask "why?", rather than say they just suck and all their fans are gay because of it. So, why you ask, do I submit my ears to their music? Because I love their music. Yes, they aren't the best singers, but lets just say rock music is not known for it's singers, at least not now-a-days. In fact off topic but currently you don't even need to have talent to sing. Cough. Hilary Duff. Paris Hilton. It's not TBS's vocals has many (girls) will tell that attract me. It's the way they duel with the dual vocals. It's original and quite a sight to hear and see. Take the song "There is no "I" in team" That song because of the dueling vocals can be taken in 2 ways both a solo confession and a conversation. Other songs, one singer sings conversational lyrics while the other sings fragmented thoughts (what's being thought). I've never seen/heard a band do this before. Yes, the music at first was pretty repetitive. Think Good Charlotte with imaginative lyrics and vocal ranges.

But the music has gotten better. Especially the drums. More original and different. "This Photograph's Proof". In Louder Now, it's become more of a "rock" rather than "emo" sound. Faster tempos and excellent riffs. ("Spin" "How's it Feel Like To be a Ghost?"). And the songs have become more diverse.
Their music has defenitly matured fron their first album, Tell All Your Friends.

The best thing about them is the lyrics, in my opinion. They're like poetry. You can read them and interpret them in so many different ways. And I've seen some crazy interpretations. Yes the earlier lyrics from TAYF were whiny-relationship-love-sick and immature. But you have to take in account that Adam Lazzara, the lead singer was 17 at the time and that is what he (any boy) was dealing with then. But with the addition of Fred Macherino and experience, the lyrics have matured for the best and have become more personal (if you know what the lyrics are refering to. They are also deep and convey so much in a little amount of space/time. Also the appeal to many bands is that you can relate to them. That is why people say music/bands save their lives. Just as others can relate to Jennifer Lopez or Metallica, I can relate to TBS, especially the latest lyrics. And although they haven't saved my life, they've definitely kept me going.

And one other point is that they are a great live band. Their records can't compare. So much energy, and very entertaining even if your not a fan. Most of all, you probably don't like them because they are not your kind of music. I can't listen to commerical rap like 50 cent because it all sounds the same to me and the lyrics are all the same but in different forms. But other rap I like is okay because its original. You have your own opinion, and I have mine. I appreciate that. I just can't stand when people say "so and so suck" without giving their own reasons why. If the world had to vote on one musicial artist to listen to, no music would survive because everyone would bring eachother down on their pick. And bad music is always better than no music. So exercise your freedom of speech and listen to what you want not to what others want or think is good. Everyone has their own opinion.

Overall, TBS is nothing exceptional. This is true. But they are at the very least a decent band. They have interesting and unique ways of combining vocals using two different singers, their music is on par with some other bands in the same genre and of higher quality than any rap or r&b, and they have interesting and unique lyrics that appeal to some people (though maybe not necessarily to you). They aren't one of my favorite bands, but I do listen to them for some reason. There is something that I find enjoyable about them, though I can't pinpoint it exactly. It's just the way everything in their songs fits together. It is really hard to ask for just one reason to like them.

Great energy in the music and by the frontman, catchy hooks, and lyrics that make you think. At least thats what I've noticed about the ~4 songs I like that my girlfriend plays.

Addict for dramatics is so right. I just went to one of their shows and it was absolutely amazing. Adam sounded great and the whole band was so energetic. And have you ever really listened to their songs? Adam and Fred have great voices and their lyrics are amazing. You should give them a chance and maybe you'll see that they are a great band.

Don't judge until you get to see them live. They're awesome and adam lazzara can definetly win, don't be a hater. They play really good live and their songs have deep meaning unlike other bands who play.
