Any program could potentially print out anything it wants as an error message, so you'd have to be more specific about what was going on and what printed it out. But in general, a 'hard' failure means something crashed or errored so badly that it could not recover or even shut down cleanly. Hard failures can also refer to hardware failures rather than software failures.

either harddisk failure or harddisk failed to start so which one that your friend got any way both are not good and need mostly a new harddisk. try to connect that hard to another computer with working windows and see if u can read from it or may be can scan for errors.
