I read the "Baby Whisperer" by Tracey Hogg when my daughter was born (she's 3 now) and she is an incredible sleeper...12 hours at night, 3 hour nap. My son is 5 weeks and seems to need a different system...anyone done anything similar?

Babies are not *meant* to sleep for 12 hours straight. In fact, a baby who sleeps long and deeply is at increased risk for SIDS. While the risk is small, if it happens to *your* baby, it's 100%!

Crying is also not a good way to "teach" a baby to sleep. Babies need to be soothed to sleep. Crying is teaching the wrong idea--that the best way to get to sleep is to get incredibly tense and angry until you drop of pure exhaustion. Babies need to learn that the right way to fall asleep is to *relax*. So nurse, rock, sing, walk, and talk calmly to your baby. He will learn to fall asleep best that way.

I know that this may be hard to believe, but you really do not have to *train* a baby to sleep.
When they are tired, they fall asleep.
When they have had enough sleep, they awake.
Most babies fall into a rough schedule pretty soon, but then change it every three weeks or so. They like to keep us on our toes!

Look at your baby's fist.
THAT is the size of his tummy!
No wonder he has to wake to eat so often! Remember, he needs to double his weight in 4-6 months and triple it by a year, and that takes a LOT of food! If you were trying to double your weight, you would be eating often too!

If it is really important for you to get your baby to sleep for longer at night, there are some safe ways to do it, but not while he is this young.

I followed my baby's lead. A 5 week old is too young for sleep training. Any reputable doctor will tell you that.
