The United States entered World War II by declaring war on Japan after the attack on Pearl Harbor.

Germany declared War on the United States as part of its Axis pact with Japan, thus enabling the U.S. to enter the European conflict, as there was some who believed the U.S. should focus on Japan and not Germany.

All this being said, it can be argued that the U.S. was involved in World War II long before the Japanese attack on Pearl Harbor.

The Lend-Lease Act allowed the United States to provide assistance to Great Britain, while officially remaining neutral in the conflict. Furthermore, the U.S. manufactured weaponry for the British since the very early days of the conflict.

OK before we entered the war we were sending volunteer pilots over to Britain to help them out knowing it was only a matter of time b4 we were in war. Then the big official reason was that the Japanese bombed Pearl Harbor before they declared war on us after we moved our fleet into the harbor. It was a move designed to KEEP us out of war figuring we would be too lazy to get into fight then...it failed big time as all it did was PISS off big time and we rebuilt the fleet so fast we were making a aircraft carrier per year (trust me that is super fast for that time).
Now Japan was allied with Germany and Italy so by being at war with them we were at war with the other 2.

Well there is Pearl Harbor, which was the kick in the *** that shoved us into full war. But theres a second side to it.

German Subs were attacking ships that had some passengers that were American. We not only requested that they be returned to us, but that they not attack our ships. They didn't comply either. This is why we entered WW2 full scale, not just with Japan.

As the German army and NAZI movement gained strenghth the European allies, namely Brittan tried to compell the US to enter in to the war, and assist them in stopping Hitlers army from taking over most of Europe. However the US did not want to involve itself into another over seas costly engagment, and delayed itself as long as possible. Meanwhile the Japanese had been island hopping and working hard on the coast of China to create its own empire in the pacific. Hitler actually allied with the Japanese i believe before the Pearl Harbour attack, and when we were attacked that day in December, national opinion changed. Since HItler was already allied with Japan, and had already declared war on the US, when the US entered the war, it included the European theater in its plans.

They were pretty much forced to join in when Pearl Harbour in the state of Hawaii was attacked by the Japanese. There is actually controversy over who attacked who first, though. some say that a the US attacked a Japanese sub or boat (i forget, i read it somewhere), and then the Japanese counter attacked...just a theory based on little evidence, though. Check it out on the net or find some good documentarys on it.

The attack on pearl harbour was only the high light of the series of events leading up to us partifitcant in ww2. There was a steady movement from isolation to partipation that was leaded by us president, Roosewelt. The basic issue of us partification is that they were (and are!) a democratic country defeninding other democratic countries (as uk) from dictators like germany and italy. Johan

--Because of our Isolation status FDR couldn't declare war against Germany and it allies (Japan and Italy). A double agent spy called Mueller informed the British that the Japanese were going to bomb Pearl Harbor and then the Prime Minister informed FDR. Knowing that he couldn't get the congress to move into the war without a decisive action against us, he allowed the Japanese to bomb Pearl Harbor and used this tool to get us into action against the Japanese. A week later Germany declared war on the U.S.

The U.S. entered WWII as a direct result of Japan's attack on Pearl Harbor. Once our nation was threatened by this aggressive action the U.S. decided to declare war on Japan and its allies.
