Now that you know WHAT RAM is... you can usually help speed it up a bit on an existing machine by going to:
start menu
settings
control panel
system
advanced
performance settings
and change the virtual memory at the bottom... I use 4000MB setting due to the requirements of some softwares I run

you need to increase RAM capacity then the best way is to get a new RAM with higher memory capacity
RAM sizes are 128, 256,512MB look which RAM is competable to your system and according to it buy the new RAM or use it in combination with your old RAM
that is 256 = 128 + 128
that is how you can upgrade

First, it is as simple as some would have you believe here. Some of the answers are too simplistic. the questions you have to asking when buying new memory are as follows:
What make of computer do I have? What is its model?
What type of memory does it use?
How much more memory do I want to use in my computer?
These are the minimum questions I would ask. There are memory sites that you can go to to find the right kind of memory to use. for your brand and model or even your brand of motherboard/Main Board.
