The first thing you need to do is estimate the size of the commercial market for your invention. If there is no market, then patenting it is a waste of time and money.

To protect an original invention OR a significant improvement to an existing product, a patent would be filed. Here's the USPTO's definition: http://www.uspto.gov/web/offices/pac/doc/general/index.html#patent
NOLO is a great, free informational site. Also, be sure to read what else the USPTO (United States Patent & Trademark Office) has to say about patents.
Associations may be a good avenue to explore. These organizations will address many of the thoughts, questions and concerns you'll inevitably have as well as many you haven't anticipated yet. See the source box for some relevant links.
Research, research, research – this cannot be stressed enough. Read as much as you can. Here are some book titles that are relevant:

I have NEVER seen an 'invention company' that wasn't a ripoff.
Be extremely careful.
They'll say they'll investigate whether your invention is commercially viable, and it always is (sic). That's the only way for them to get money out of you!!!
Ask them for 10 people's names you can contact, that have been financially successful after going through them.
Any excuse they come up with of why that can't be done, RUN do not walk away from them!
Been there twice when I was a lot younger and gullible.

do a patent search to make sure no one else already invented it. You can try inventech or davidson. There are plenty of invention companies out there but they are expensive...then again going it alone is still expensive. At least they have lawyers that can help you figure it all out.
