I have seen in the makeup offer white and peach pencils that are supposed to be for creating shadows on the face.

How do I find pictures/explanations for this? How do you create shadows? For example on your nose.. to make it seem that it points upwards?

I saw something about the use of white to create light blue shades in makeup. Does anyone know other optical illusions?

Its an entire color wheel of concealers used for creating effects. Here is some info:
Corrective Concealer Wheel
Four targeted concealers in one easy to use container.
Yellow for neutralizing purple shadows.
Green corrects redness from Rosacea and blemishes.
Pink blends away sallowness.
Tan conceals and covers imperfections.
The shades can be mixed for perfect correction. The smooth cream to powder formula is long wearing and doesn't crease or melt.

(HOW DOES IT WORK?) By neutralizing colors that appear opposite on the color wheel. For example- blue neutralizes orange, green neutralized red and so on. To neutralize in terms of skintone, means to render back to its original color. So in order to cover red blemishes and blotchy skin effectively, you must first neutralize the red with a green pigment corrector. Then, cover with make up. Using a typical flesh toned concealer won't hide the problem because the red or blue tones will show through. So must always neutralize the flaw first.

Dark, Under-eye circles- A good concealer for dark circles under the eyes should have a yellow base. Yellow combats blue tones, which includes shadows and fine blood vessels near the surface of the skin.

Tattoos- If it is a blue tattoo, use a yellow concealer. Dab on the concealer, let set.You also will need to apply a good water-proof, heavy duty concealer that matches your skin tone perfectly. Apply a powder to help the make-up set and last longer.

Sallow, Yellow Complexions- You need to use a lavender based concealer/primer. Dark Spots (aging spots and what not)- Use a yellow concealer.

Bruises- Yellow, brownish bruises can be covered by using a lavender concealer. Bluish-red bruises can be covered with a green concealer.

Acne, red blotchiness, rosacea- You want to use a green concealer. If the blemish is raised or has a flaky scale over it, you must be careful to blend well enough so the green can't be seen. Also, only layering on make-up can sometimes make the blemish stand out more. Use your best judgment.

When in doubt which shade to use for perfect pigment correction, simply refer to the color wheel. Select the shade on the opposite side of the color wheel from the imperfection.

There are tons of ways to do this. I usually use white eyeshadow and a blush maybe a shade darker than the foundation. The best book about this is "Making Faces", by the late-and-fabulous Kevyn Aucoin. You can't go wrong if learn these techniques... however, and this is super-important - this only works in photography and stage shows. Do not try to paint somebody else's face onto yours and go out in public... you will look made up.

Sadly, the book is not available in hardcover anymore...

Color it on your lid and then apply a shadow to match and smudge/blend it well
