Planning on doing some off roading with my 4Runner this fall and am wondering if a 4 ton double-line come along is good to bring along for an occasional extraction? Or, is a Hi-Lift Jack a better solution? Where I am going, I would envision the possibility of getting stuck in mud. I'm not trying to winch myself up and over rocks or anything like that.

When I say come-along, i'm referring to one of those manual things, not an electric winch that mounts to the front of the vehicle.

DO NOT take chains. Use tow straps, a tree saver and make sure your vehcile has tow hooks or shackles. A come along and a hi lift jack serve basically the same purpose in this application only the jack can jack the vehicle as well. Everyone gets stuck eventually or you didn't try hard enough. It is a good idea to go in pairs or a group incase there's no solid trees around then you can use another vehicle as your anchor point. Just be careful and keep your equipment in good shape. When in doubt push it out.

The come-along will get you out, but it's definitely not a bad thing to go with a group of friends to help pull you out.

You better bring both, the 4 ton will work but what if you break the cable..
Bring yourself about 20 feet of chain also

I'd take both, but DO NOT pull the comealong with another vehicle. You can hook it on and ratchet it up, but do not tug on it. Good luck.
