Ferrets are the best small animals that you can get. They dont even stink more than any other animal if their scent glands are removed. they are very friendly, social and funny. Between guinea pigs and hamsters, guinea pigs are 1000 times better than some stinky old hamster. Guinea pigs live 7-15 years, while hamsters live only 2. Guinea pigs dont smell nearly as bad as hamsters and are much more social, not to mention cuter and sweeter and more loving and cuddly and not as likely to try to escape. Ever seen a calico hamster? I diddent think so! But dont keep the guinea pig outside, because that can be dangerous because of predators, bugs, poisens, kids, heat, cold, and rain. Dont keep them in the garage either because of gas fumes. Getting two would also be good, as they are very social animals and can get lonely.

I would not keep a guinea outside. That is unfair. A hamster would be a good idea, I like the european black ones (they tend to have better personalities) the little chinese ones are mean. Also, rats make better pets than hamsters and they don't bite. Rats are also smart enough not to walk off your hand, hamsters tend to do this so if you get one be careful. Mice and gerbils are hard to keep a hold of. You can also find adult hamsters (sometimes better because you can get an idea of their personality) at any local shelter. We have 3 in the shelter where I live, and adoption does not help finance the breeding of these animals (there are far too many). You can also be proud that you rescued a little guy that needed a home. If you must get one from the pet store, I would get a european black or a teddy bear. Petsmart carries both and their animals are better cared for and have already seen a vet.

If you are asking this question, I would say get a fish. They are better pets for beginners because they do not suffer pain the way mammals do. Get a 2-1/2 gallon tank with a couple plants and a betta fish. Change half the water weekly, use a few drops of water conditioner, add a few food pellets every couple days.
Guinea pigs require about an hour of your day, every day. They take up a lot of room (at least 36" X 24" per piggy for cage, a room for their excersize). They need to be kept inside. They need a handful of mixed leafy greens and a couple bites of veggie daily. A quarter tab of 100mg vit C daily. At least half hour of affection a day, or get 2 female littermates. Daily scooping of bedding...
Hamsters are not as socialable as guinea pigs and some learn to bite when they don't want to be held. They are less time consuming and are easier to feed, and take up less room. I still recommend the fish though!

Do you live in an area that a guinea pig can survive outside? or a hamster for that matter....a hamster has to stay in an enclosed cage ie. fish tank w/lid or a store bought cage...a guinea (only males have an odor called musk....they use a thick oily substance from their rear to mark territory) can stay in an open tank or even a child's swimming pool (in the house)...if the guinea has to stay outside, and the hamster gets to live inside, I'd say hamster...if the guinea stays inside, I'd say guinea (guineas will "purr" when they hear their owner comming)....the animal is supposed to be a part of the family, not a thing to throw food at (being outside)...maybe you shouldn't get either.

All mammal pets are work! This weekend for instance in 100 degree heat it was all about my hamster girls and keeping them cool.
If you are looking for cute and cuddly really I would go with a Rat. They will come to you when called and curl up and nap with you.
My hamsters just want to be held for a few minutes and then run around and explore.
Syrian Hamsters though in my experience have less medical problems than any of my ratties did. All my ratties had something wrong, be it pneumonia, tumors, etc.. at one time or another. So far at 1.5 years no medical problems with my Hamsters.
All I know about the GP is that they are a little smelly.

i think guinea pig. I had a hamster when i way young er it spend most of the time asleep and most of the remaining time trying to escape from its cage, a very small portion of time trying to cram as much food as poss into its cheeks. By the way they sleep during the day so if you do get one, make sure its hamster wheel is well oiled!

Neither. Hamsters are mean and guinea pigs make noise at night. Get a rat. They are friendly and quiet.

Guinea pigs are easier to catch when the critters get out of their pens, and they can do well outside, just give them an ice bottle when the temperatures get too high.
