He's a doc. He was born in Vinita, Oklahoma. McGraw attended high school at Shawnee Mission North High School in Overland Park, Kansas. He was given a football scholarship to attend the University of Tulsa, but was injured and forced to transfer to Midwestern State University. McGraw graduated from the Midwestern State University in 1975 with a B.A. (Bachelor of Arts) in psychology, and then went on to get a Masters in experimental psychology and a Doctorate in clinical psychology at the University of North Texas.

He is not a doctor. He just plays one onTV.
The title is the same as the Dr. Dre, or Dr. Feelgood.
Edit: getting a Doctorate degree in psychology does not make you a Doctor.

Dr.Phil graduated with a B.A. in psychology in 1975. He earned his Master's degree at University of North Texas in experimental psychology and a Doctorate in clinical psychology in 1979.
You might be thinking about "Dr.Laura", who, though she technically can call herself "Dr." earned that title by studying the effects of insulin on lab rats, not by studying anything to do with humans!
Personally I think they are both kind of creepy, but at least Dr.Phil sounds like he wants to help people rather than throwing them into the "pit of hellfire & damnation"!
