I suppose you could call me conservative - I'm intensely pro-life, and although I'm a foster parent and follow democratic lines as far as public help goes, I tend to vote Republican or Independent.
That said, I think the Earth is in serious jeopardy. I'm for hard-line restrictions on industry pollution, I wish that hybrid engines or alternate fuel sources would become mandatory, and I hope the U.S. adopts mandatory recycling, as they do in Germany and other European nations. I think the Earth could "survive" regardless of what we do to it, it's whether the rebounding and repairing would cause widespread human death and destruction that we have to worry about. If we don't do the cleanup ourselves, we may not be around to watch the Earth repair itself.

Being conservative really has nothing to do with your views on the environment, no matter how the environmentalists try to make it out. There are a great number of conservatives that are hunters (that want to preserve wetlands and forests) for example. And just being liberal doesnt mean that you support the environment (like John Kerry and his big gas guzzling SUV's).
That being said- I think its all about balance. The earth can certainly be harmed- so we have to be careful, at the same time, we need to balance that concern with the needs to humanity. Did you see the recent studies about wildfires? Large wildfires are directly correlating to temperature increases (global warming) and may have a much larger effect than anythihng we humans are putting into the air. There is so much science in either direction, for people that truly look into an issue and dont just go with an emotional answer, that it can sometimes be hard to tell what is right and what is not.

You are absolutely right. This is an issue of, literally life and death. But I think Cheney definitely let the country see a taste of the Bush administration's policy on the Environment and Ecology when he totally ignored Environmental groups and alternative energy sources in his corrupt "energy policy" meetings.
It is sad how many people do not take environmental problems seriously. They are like heavy smokers who continually laugh off the doctor's warnings about the harmful effects of smoking.
As I stated in previous question, it is bizarre to me that Global Warming has left the realm of science and become a political battle ground. And of course, the United States stands alone in the wolrd in its backward stance on this issue. Bush clearly stated that he could not sign the Koyoto treaty on Global Warming because it was bad for the economy. I think Gore was absolutely right when he called Global Warming an "Inconvenient truth"
It is our current administration that has clearly set the tone for these attitudes to flourish. And it spells disaster for our environment. This is not a joke, this is no less than survival of the species.

I am conservative about economics, so I am conservative with regards to this question.
Hell yes, pollution matters! Yes we can harm the earth! Where many conservatives go wrong is a knee-jerk reaction to anything that makes things harder for a business, but what they don't realize is that the unfettered ability to pollute and destroy the environment isn't a right that anyone, business or individual, should have *ever* had, so it's not wrong to take it away.
Personally, my version of environmental protection would just be to create and enforce a set of laws to require businesses to clean up their own messes. In other words, I'd give business complete freedom to do whatever they want, as long as they clean it up. Now, of course, it's always easier to prevent pollution than to clean it up, but this would still allow, for example, a factory that couldn't *help* producing CO2 emissions to spend money to clean CO2 out of the air in their community. As long as they removed as much as they produced, they'd be fine.

I consider myself a moderate conservative, and I feel that everyone needs to be respectful of the environment. However, do not stereotype all conservatives to feel this or that way about any issues, you will find that there are many different reasons as to why people identify with one political group or another. I tend to prioritize environmental issues somewhere underneath our country's economical state, but that does not mean that it is at the bottom of the list.

Of course pollution is important. It's just that Liberals tend to overblow the problem and overreact to it. They also overestimate mankind's ABITITY to pollute a very large, self-regulating system.

There is such a thing as ecological responsibility....
Then there is also the tree hugging, wacko, extreme...which is ecological irresponsibility....with socialism at it's root
The tree hugging extremist wackos are insincere...they live to protest & make noise.....and spoiled brats as they are...they aren't out to solve anything...they just desire attention...such as their beloved Al Gore (what a phoney)...
Conservatives are for responsible use of natural resources.....
the tree hugging libs are for drawing attention to themselves by doing what they do best.....whineing...
