We had the same problem...it told us to uninstall it and then wouldn't let us install it...and we didn't want to call the company caz they ask for your credit card number...the charge you to fix your problems with thier piece of crap software.....anyway...we endend up getting like 25 infected files, so we had to buy a different virus protection (NOT NORTON) and it cleaned up some of it...but the computer is not working right still, and we may have to pay someone to fix it....I RECOMMEND TO NOT USE NORTON....THEY SUCK.

If you've uninstalled the old programme using either add/remove from your control panel or Norton's own uninstall programme you should be able to install a newer version right away. If there are going to be problems you get a message on the screen as soon as the install wizard starts. It will tell you that there is an older version of the programme still installed on your machine. If this happens the only way around it is to down load and run a reg editor, go CNET and look for on there, which will fix the reg entries Norton makes and remove all trace of it from your PC. Short of that the only other thing is a full hard drive format but you don't want to do that.

Well as far as i know, you should have no problem installing the new one but make sure you delete all traces of the old one - a complete uninstall even from the registry - and 'do not' install 2 DIFFERENT ANTIVIRUS softwares on the pc at the same time for example mcafee virus scan and notron anti-virus - it will cause a clash and an irreprable crash error that most pc users do not know how to correct - you will have to completely reinstall your windows - :) - hope that helps.
P.S: Norton Internet Security isn't exactly user friendly or effective - if you're using it that's fine - but i find Mcafee to be more user friendly and efficient at what it does - it is also more widely endorsed by most Internet Service Providers.

If you have managed to uninstall it, count yourself lucky !
Do not use Norton , as it is really resource hungry ( slows down your computer ) , is not all that good at security, and quite frankly rubbish !
Check Internet forums for better antivirus systems.
try AVG ( free version if you like ) Nod32 ( www.eset.com ) or bitdefender, any of which do a much better job, and do not slow down your computer so much .
By the way, I am a professional IT engineer.

It'll work. The only reason why it didn't work was because that's how they get people to upgrade to the newest version. Don't see why, it sucks as a product.
