I am a little confused. Both values refer to your Internet connection. The 512 downstream value is the one that most people associate with their 'broadband' speed but this refers to the speed that you can download (ie downsteam) from the Internet, the normal thing you will do when viewing web sites, downloading pod casts etc.

The upstream is the speed of your ability to upload data from your computer to the Internet, for example when you send an email this is uploaded. Normally your upload speed is much lower than you download speed (hence the term ADSL, which mean an Asynchronous Digital Subscribers Line) BUT you seem to imply that you upload speed is 4x more than your download speed. Have you do these the right way round or are the units different?

yes, that indeed is the connection speed. but what is rather surprising to me is that the upload speed is greater than the download speed which is generally the other way round. and yes, this is ADSL (cos the upload and download speeds are not synchronous i.e. asynchronous).
