First, let's keep in mind that "we" did not see any gassed bodies on the mountainside. The media showed them to us and we "believed" that this was the the work of Hussein.
To the question, I believe that we have a group of political leaders today that do use moral issues to push their political agendas. I don't think all of them do it, but I feel a majority do. The Bible thumping is certainly getting old with me, as it is only an excuse. Nothing makes the killing of innocent people just, no matter if we (America) are doing it or others are. If we don't give up some of these antiquated religious beliefs they will be the end of humanity, not it's salvation.
However, we use moral issues such as genocide to invade other countries and press our beliefs and agendas, all the while killing who? More innocent people. At the end of the day, everyone has their agenda, and everyone wants to get their piece of the pie. Look at the facts. They have oil, we're a bunch of gas guzzling users (note I did not use the word consumer as that would imply we would be more socially and environmentally conscious in our use), and here we are. Enough for me anyway.

YES. In the USA that's what they've been doing to us. Good for you to realize this. They pander to the church groups, etc., with issues like gay marriage and abortion and then they start a war that has killed 40,000+ people in Iraq. Go figure - this has always been the way it is. The Bush Admin. has divided the country under the smokescreen of morality, because as long as the people are 'fighting amongst ourselves,' they can continue to do whatever they want in the face of greed and power. We are too distracted by the illusion of these 'important' moral issues to see the big picture.
P.S. Regarding WMD's - Saddam MAY have had them, but he probably moved them out of his country, maybe into Saudi Arabia??? Saudi Arabia, birthplace of Osama Bin Laden, where women can't vote or even drive a car. Saudi Arabia, a U.S. ally that we won't touch.

Stop me if I'm wrong - but it looks like you think we are in Iraq because of morality. I am one, I hope, of many who believes there are WMDs buried somewhere in Iraq or have been carted to another country. Think of this: We know Saddam used them, we saw the dead, gassed bodies on the mountainside, he did not provide proof that he destroyed the WMDs (as instructed by the UN), and he did not allow inspections for 4 years. I don't understand how anyone can deny their existence.

First of all I believe in morality.
I don't believe it was invented, I believe it is inherent to humanity.
It is not "a simple weapon of politics" though it is often devalued and reduced to such.
I wasn't in Australia when the war broke out so I don't know what reasons our country gave itself for going off to war. I was in one of the -stan countries; we all agreed that "yes George Bush is evil (his allying with Islam Karimov was well known there) but so is Saddam". None of us knew who was worse then.
Personally I think we shouldn't have gone to Iraq. I believe the Iraqi people (and doubly so for the Kurds) had the right to be the ones to overthrow Saddam what with all that he had done to them.
From the legal side we have a treaty with the US that binds us to come to their aid. but I still think we had a choice. I don't really know why we decided to go there (none of us really believed Bush or Blair) but I do know why we are still there. In supporting Bush's war we have the blood of innocent Iraqis on our hands. That debt of blood needs to be repayed and so we stay to rebuild stability there with the blood of our people.
I don't think Australia had a hidden agenda in the Iraq war (we have enough oil from the Timor sea), we had nothing to gain from the war at all. America did and they got what they wanted so they're trying to pull out and leave others holding the bag so they can go wage war elsewhere. Our involvement in East Timor however hasn't been so noble due to our interests over there.
Being manipulated (a passive verb) implies a measure of ignorance. We weren't really ignorant then and we definitely aren't now. Maybe we want to be manipulated or coerced. In which case we are just as guilty of immorality as those that manipulate.
But where do we go now... I think if we consider ourselves a moral country we really need to reconsider our relationship with America. We have enough to deal with through the wrongs that we commit alone as a country to be joining in on those of another.

It does seem likely that the concept of morality was invented by those in power to control the masses. Without such righteous indignation, we would simply live our lives according to our own ethical standards according to the risks we were willing to take.

yes they use morality to sway people to their arguments. However this can only be used to advance amoral agenda if they lie to us or hide the facts from us. So the mask is a mask of lies and misinformation not morality.

Yes. They thump on the bible and claim to be following Jesus in order to woo the masses of churchgoers into giving them their votes, while the whole time they take bribes and promote things that only makes a profit for themselves and their contributors.
