This is at the heart of the problem and is the reason America is so hated by the Arab world...
Every AmeriKan President for the past 20 years or more (especially the Republican ones) has passed on HUNDREDS of MILLIONS OF DOLLARS to Israel just for the building new communities and throwing out the Palestinians from their ancestral homes in the process... Add in Billions more in arms and other aid... and it's easy to see the effects of the Millions of dollars 'contributed' (another word for graft) to the politicians..
That's a pretty good return on investment, if you ask me... $50 million or so in campaign contributions and $50 BILLION or so in payback from the best politicians money can buy.
And, the sad thing is... AmeriKans just don't get it... they just don't know enough about the graft and greed in Washington to understand why Amerika is the most hated country in the world or why AmeriKa and AmeriKans are considered as being arrogant and aggressive.
It can only get worse... unless the born agains who are pulling Bush's chain... can be gotten out of the room behind the Oval Office.

I am a Democrat and I do have a problem with social programs because WE, taxpayers are paying for people who do not want to work to stay at home and have five or six kids and also get paid for that, who are too lazy to go do anything to be able to put food on the table. I came from an immigrant family and when my parents arrived in the US they did not know how to speak English. This was in the early sixties and none of the social programs assisted them with any funds. They both went out to work in hotels on Miami Beach, cleaning toilets and washing dishes for minimal pay. My parents had three kids and we all had to go to school and needed food and shelter. Not once did they get any assistance. For two years we did not have a Christmas or birthdays, we had no money to buy anything. My parents saved money and we moved on and on as years went by to better housing and financially we improved as years went by to the point that they were able to buy a small house. I have lived in this country well over 40 years and I can say I, or any of my family members took one penny from anyone so they could stay at home. I have no pity and cannot find an excuse for wanting to continously live off the government. I can understand one having a bad situation and getting assistance for maybe six months until they can get back on track, but come on, there are people out there who live their entire lives with the excuse they have too many kids or just can't find a job.....please!

Look close enough and you'll find all kinds of hypocrisy. We live in a time when 'Right is Wrong and Wrong is Right'. For example, it's okay to murder a baby, but illegal kill a dolphin.
The money to Israel is for obvious reasons. To support a nation in the middle east that is friendly to the US. It's not altruistic, it's militaristic.
But I agree that money could be more wisely spent in the US. We need to find ways to take care of those that need assistance. I'm not talking about giving free money to folks that aren't willing to work, that's just dumb. But there are people that need assistance and I'd like to see my tax money go to help them.
Someone else posted about Africa. We give lots to that nation, as we should.
But don't let your observation about Israel and Help Program giving make you think it's a conservative thing. The Democrats have similar problems with their logic, just different.

Yes, I complain about social programs. And about giving money Israel. Or anywhere else for that matter. I would rather see us withdraw our troops from around the world and let the cards fall where they may.
If a bunch of dictators ran amok in the world without our troops acting to buffer them, then maybe the world would view our intervention differently.
If we withdrew our -billions- from the U.N., vastly more than any other nation's contribution, perhaps the world would not take us for granted.
I would prefer we concentrated on building up our own infrastructure and let the world fend for itself for a bit.

It's not hypopcritical. Conservatives would rather see US military power crushing people over the world than spent at home on what they feel are "lazy leeches." Neo-cons, in particular, are totally devoted to Israel. Do the poor vote for them? Why should they care about them? No, it's consistent. Don't forget, all born-again Christians are conservative. They believe the Bible commands that you protect the Jewish people. No, consistent from any angle.

2.5 billion is less than 0.1% of US annual budget and about 12 days' worth of war in Iraq. Israel is our only friend in that part of the world and the only country who supports US almost unconditionally in a region that dreams of wiping US off the map. Name one country that receives US foreign aid that is not building "military weapons." Supporting allies is what smart nations do. I happen to be a liberal, but I disagree with your logic. No one argues that social programs are facing a budget crisis, but to say that foreign aid is wasteful is unnecessary is precisely what most conservatives would argue.

We should give them much MORE. Not many countries are acting civilized these days. They are too afraid of thuggish terrorists to stand up and do what is right: eliminate them. LIBERAL people like you are exactly the same ones who would be crying like a baby for conservatives to protect you if you or your loved ones were victims of a 9/11-type scenario..guaranteed.

Isreal stands, fortunately not alone - thanks to us, on the front line, facing down a horde of extremist Muslim terrorists. When they deal with these bloodthirsty animals, it prevents us from having to do so.
I say send them an extra billion next year, for their current efforts. Every Muslim terrorist that they kill this year, ensures that YOUR children (and mine) will be able to sleep in peace and security 20 years from now.
Think about it.

A bargain, Israel fights many wars for us. If liberals ever took the time to read they would understand how far we've come since welfare was instituted! Can you name me a 'smart' liberal by the way?

Thanks for pointing that out, I am a conservative who supports Israel, this is good news to me. We also give money to other countries too. In American the big difference is, so many don't want to work, who could.
