Unemployment extensions have to be approved by the federal government and only under specific guidlines. Unemployment, throughout the state, must increase above the national average for three consecutive months before a state can petition for the extension. Either this or a national emergency like Hurricane Katrina in Louisiana. And, since the unemployment rate only takes into account people RECEIVING unemployment insurance benefits and not people who do not qualify, are under-employed (PhDs working in McDonalds), are unable to work or who have already exhaused their benefits, the likelihood of the rate INCREASING (key word here) above the national average for 3 consecutive months is unlikely. Also, as you can see from what is not included in the rate, politicians can easily manipulate the numbers to make the state look better (ie: lower rates) in election years.

Actually alot of states dont, mostly because they dont want people sitting on thier butts getting paid when they arent doing anything. Now I'm not saying that's the case with you, trust me I had the same problem when a transfer fell through when I was pregnant. If you are in real desperate need of help till you find a job then you can always go to FIA(that's the intitals now for the welfare department there right? I've been out of MI for to long now) and they can help for awhile. But trust me it takes forever for them to open a case so you really gotta be on thier butts which hinders your search for a job so if you can get by some other way it's probally for the best.
I hope you can find something soon, I know the job market out there is horrible. I ended up having to move back home to MA only after half a year.

I lived in Michigan and the company that I worked for went under. Did the unemployment thing and still could not find anything. I didn't get any extensions they had just stopped doing them back in spring of 2004. The bill was up to be voted for in Washington D.C. and it missed by one vote and the Presidential Candidate John Kerry did not show up for his vote and then turn around and said that he was all for the helping of those who were unemployed at the time.
That is why we don't have extensions on unemployment.
I had to move out of state to find a job. Moved to Maryland and have been gainfully employed for 2 years.

Do not blame the Michigan Governor for the problems in unemployment, she inherited a huge mess from the former Governor and then the Bush administration is unresponsive to the needs of the people, they would rather spend 3 billion a week for a war that should have never been that we were led to by false pretense. I think Granholm is doing everything she can to bring jobs to Michigan. The answer is in the federal government and you could do more by writing your congress and senate people then to post a question here.

It gives you 13 extra weeks to find a job. This is usually given if you were laid off and not fired.
That was when MI gave one.
