in short you can not connect directly. the only thing you could do if you can not afford to buy a modem with an ethernet port is to connect the ethernet port of your router to your ethernet port on your computer (if your system is relatively new it should aleready have the port).
Now connect the modem to the same computer as the ethernet router. Now conect the other computers as required to your router, making sure to specify that they connect via another computer on your network.
you also need to go through your internet connection on the now internet enabled computer and set it to internet connection sharing to on.
once done, and if you want to be able to share files on your home network then set the requried folders to shared. Now you should be set.

if failing all the above and your modem and router do not have ethernet lan connections then you will have to buy a modem with the desired port.
you then connect the modems phone line to your phone line, the ethernet port on your computer to one of the (typicaly blue) ports labeled to computers on my belkin router. the green port on the belkin router connects to the ethernet port on te modem.
now you are connected. you can then set up the rest of your network as you desire.

belkin sell routers with built in modems, i've got one. it's a lot easier to use, you just log into the router/modem from a pc on the network and plug in the username etc for your virgin broadband account .

you can't, you need an ADSL router like http://www.amazon.co.uk/gp/product/B0000TZ8Z8/202-3789659-2563017?v=glance&n=560798&s=electronics&v=glance
ADSL and DSL do not mix, DSL expects the data cable presentation to be UTP Cat 5 ethernet such as from a cable modem, not usb.

you need to connect the uplink port of the router to the ethernet port of the modem. if your modem does not have an ethernet port, you are going to need to get one that does.

you can"t directly, only through a third party PC or change the adsl modem.
