Today's movies reflect today's culture and it's people. Just like the movies of every other decade.
The 1930s will be remembered for Gone With The Wind and The Wizard of Oz.
The 1940s had Citizen Kane, Casablanca, and It's a Wonderful Life.
The 1950s had a banner year with On the Waterfront, Singin' In The Rain, Some Like it Hot, The African Queen, High Noon, North By Northwest, Rear Window, Vertigo, From Here to Eternity, Shane, and Ben Hur.
The 1960s brought us Lawrence of Arabia, The Graduate, Psycho, Bonnie & Clyde, West Side Story, Butch Cassidy & The Sundance Kid, and The Sound of Music.
In the 1970s we loved The Godfather, Star Wars, One Flew Over The Cuckoo's Nest, Apocalypse Now, Taxi Driver, Jaws, MASH, Close Encounters of the Third Kind, The French Connection, American Graffiti, Rocky, and The Deer Hunter.
The 1980s gave us Raging Bull, ET, Raiders of the Lost Ark, and Platoon.
The 1990s included Schindler's List, The Silence of the Lambs, Forrest Gump, Dances with Wolves, GoodFellas, and Pulp Fiction.

True.
Forget about American Pie. At least that movie never took itself seriously. What about the battalions of predictable superhero movies that get elevated to the status of great cinema? What bothers me the most is the scripts. With all the technology, the experience, the talent and all the money in the world, why can't Hollywood find a decent playwright?

I agree that most movies coming out into theaters are ridiculously stupid. However, not all movies are that bad. Unfortunately, predictable chickflicks and comedies with crude jokes are much more popular than documentaries, or movies that are based on reality, like a historical fiction movie. I find that the same is true with television. Predictable reality series become popular when a small minority of TV-watchers watch worthwhile shows, such as the news.

true! today a lot of people are turning really good books and turning it into bad movie mostly because they take long books and they have to cut out al the good parts and nobody has any creativity anymore they all do remakes, sequals (bad sequals), or take really good old horror movies or something and modernize it, they use pretty much the same plot lines and story lines as every other movie similar to it, they use too much stuff like props and stuff that they think will make the movie better and filled with more action and that it'll be so mysterious but it turns out that it has absolutly nothing to do with the movie and makes everything so confusing but then everybody thinks its such a great movie because they still make it entertaining and these days they have too much stupid crap like yea things like in american pie and all that these days movies have no good value its got too much perverted stuff, too much props, and too many plot lines that never end, and most of the movies these days are modernized versions of movies before this time which makes them suck

It's a mix, like it's always been.
There have been some really good movie ideas this summer
Superman Returns, Pirates of the Caribean 2, Devil Wears Prada and there have been some others.
But really, I don't the quality has changed all that much since we started making movies. There was a lot of stupid movies made back when, there a lot being made now. If it bothers you, don't go see a movie till someone you know confirms it was good.

False... i still find a lot of movies to be interesting/funny/scary... there's the movie 'Stay' if you haven't seen it, go rent it... its weird and unpredictable and will keep you guessing until the end...
after watching that, try to say that more are predictable and stupid... you just don't have an eye for good movies...
also watch 'House of 1000 Corpses' and then 'Devil's Rejects' (sequel)...

Partly true. I don't go to a lot of movies because many are just not very good. But, there are some that are, you have to be a bit more selective. If people don't go to see the bad ones, they'll start making better ones. Doesn't that make sense?

some of them are, sure. but not all of them. there have been lots of movies made in the past few years that are anything but boring and predictable. The Lord of the Rings Trilogy was the absolute best. it was slightly predictable if you'd read all of the books, but not in a bad way at all.

Well.....may be there is a point in your question upto a certain limit. However, I wont wish to dump all the movies categorically in that sense. Some of them are really worth watching. Please don't think hollywood was producing all time classics only between 30s & 70s. Even in those days there were hundreds of trash-pots.
