A great series for a Harry Potter lover is the Young Wizards series by Diane Duane. There are 7 or 8 books in the series. The main characters start out around age 13 in the first book.
Book 1: So You want to be a Wizard
Book 2: Deep Wizardry
Book 3: High Wizardry
Book 4: Wizardry Abroad
etc.
I'm 30 and I even love this series!

There are actually quite a few older series and new series that follow the same line as Harry Potter. The Chronicles of Narnia by CS Lewis, The Lord of the Rings Trilogy by JRR Tolkien, Eragon and Eldest by Christopher Paolini, Inkspell and Inkheart by Cornelia Funke, The Artemis Fowl Series by Eion Colfer, The Bartemaeus Trilogy by Jonathon Stroud, A Series of Unfortunate Events by Lemony Snickett, and Magyk Series by Angie Sage and Mark Zug.

Why not a classic like Narnia, by C.S. Lewis (of Alice in Wonderland fame). All the rest are copycats.(The Lion the Witch and the Wardrobe), if it's just the age bracket, what about Judy Bloom's books?

I see a lot of similarities between Harry Potter and The Lord of the Rings. Both heroes are kinda like "the choosen one", they are both clueless to their power, etc.
JRR Tolkein

Well...if you're just talking about the fantasy genre in general, I would recomment the Inheritance trilogy by Christopher Paolini; the first two books are called Eragon and Eldest, the third book is not out yet.

I recommend the Chronicles of Narnia by CS Lewis. They are great books along the same lines. For girls, there are a ton of teenage centered books if you go to your local library and ask.
