I've had lots of hamsters over the years. Some will warm up to you & be friendly but most wont. I've gotten lots of hamster bites & they are escape artists. I had a friend with rats & they seem better. Once you get past the creepy factor (they ARE rats) they seem like good pets. Very personable. If you want a rodent thats cute & cuddly but without the pointy nose, how about a guinea pig? I had one before I became allergic & they are pretty cool. They dont sleep all day like hamsters & never bite. They are squirmy when taking them from their cage but they will sit & let you pet them once you get them out...& they actually purr!!

I agree with the above - a bunny - however, please do some research online about the care of owning a rabbit as a pet. Their systems are incredibly fragile and they need specific foods and care or can die quite unexpectadly. However, rabbits can be litter box trained and are amazing little gentle creatures. But, if you're chosing between a rat or a hamster, I'd get another hamster (of a different sex than the one you already have) as you'll save money because you already have the necessary supplies for the hamster you currently own.

I like hamsters and rats (have both currently). If you want a pet that is more social and a little smarter (no offense to my hamster babies), I'd go with a rat. If you do purchase a rat, though, you'll want to get two of the same sex (or two of the opposite sex and make sure one of them is neutered) because rats are very social and even if you play with them often, they will want a cage mate. Plus it's adorable watching them play together. Have fun with whatever critter you choose!

Definately a rat, I have 3 and they are great. They will ride around on your shoulder and will play in the living room without running off and hiding. Get a baby, they sell 'crawlers' at pet stores for snake food and they are only about 4 weeks old. Also, males tend to be mellower. They love to have their heads scratched, they turn their head to the side and look like little dogs.

a rat is basically a hamster that can jump.
why not buy social hamsters (not all are social) like dwarf hamsters

you can put them together and you just clean 1 cage instead of 2.

If you do not mind rats, they are much better. They are highly intellegent and can be trained. They are also less likely toescape if you take them out to play with. They do not frighten nearly as easily and are intellegent enough not to jump out of your hands if youtake them outside.

They are great pets, IF you can get over the fact t hat they are rats.

A ferret! They are funny and sweet and loving and dont smell bad if they have they're scent glands removed. You need two though, or they will get lonely. Good luck!
