A room air filter will help. It will help clean all of the dust out of the air. You need something that will move the air though. Oreck advertises one that sounds good.

Something else that may help is a trick I learned from a friend of mine in the Navy who is a neat freak now. And that is hairspray. Use hairspray on the ceiling and the dust will stick to the ceiling instead of all over your desks and counters and stuff. Just don't hold a flame anywhere near the ceiling after you do it.

He also gave me another good tip and this is for cleaning mirrors and windows. Use newspaper to clean glass. It won't leave streaks or lint. I'm assuming he knew well with all the intense inspections they have to go through.

The first item of business is to determine just what the dust is. Skin flakes are one of the elements of dust (your arm sheds 700,000 flakes a day) but unless you are the Elephant Man, this is probably not the source.

Gather up some of the dust into a wad, and let's look at it. If my suspicions are correct, you have in your fingers a little ball of fiberglass particles. It may be discolored, but it should match the material used for insulation in your attic.

The fiberglass enters the room from the attic around the air duct grill, where there is a gap around the grille "can", usually about 1/4 to 1/8 of an inch. Remove and clean the grille, and caulk this gap tightly closed, using your finger for a good seal. This process should be repeated for all the a/c grilles in the home.

Make sure the return air chamber under the air handler is tightly sealed, as well.

As for the removal of existing dust, use a damp cloth on all hard surfaces. For vacuuming, use a Shop Vac and run a discharge hose from the exhaust to an exterior window (seal around it with a towel) to make certain you do not "recycle" the dust back into the air.

Stop shedding so much dead skin. Most household dust is actually dead shedded skin.
