The reason would be that we long for community, and with this we get to have community without rejection. People can put their best foot forward with well thought of ideas. Show their artistic side with an HTML customized page, that has video and sound capabilities. It is to show off, how many people you know in your community to feel special, and picture comments to make you feel more attractive in your community.
In short, it helps with feeling cared about in the way you want to in a society that may not do that at all.

So many peopel can express themselves without as many limitations put on them form other sites, and they have the ability to do things that are not available anywhere else, like photo slideshows and music, videos, pictures, surveys, games, and anything else that can be found on many myspace user accounts. Also, it doesn't hurt to have millions of people use it, as its easy to find a friend who has an account.

Because it fasely promises attention, love, friendship etc etc.
It makes you think you're making "good friends" because they're linked in your provile and give you an occasional ";)"
It's addictive because it gives you a sense of security, however false it is. Like everything else that doesn't have any lasting value, it will leave you alone and lonely given time.
