Most laptops pretty much have the same insides (motherboard, CPU, hard drive, etc). So basically, it comes down to warranty and support.

I run a computer consulting business and I own a Toshiba laptop and I am very happy with it. However, I usually recommend Dell laptops for college students. The reason is the Accidental Damage Service they offer.

Basically, its a protection plan that covers just about everything. You could throw it out the window and they will replace the machine for you if you get the extra damage plan.

My advice is to get in touch with the school you are attending and ask if they have a purchase program with any of the manufacturers (most schools do).

Those programs offer a discount on purchases, and in Dell's case the price works out to getting the 4 year warranty and Accidental Damage Service for free.

Good luck and enjoy college!!!

All three brands you mentioned have good reputations. I've used them all. It comes down to features for price.

Decide how much you want to spend first. The most imprtant issue, to me, for a laptop is screen size and clarity...get the best and biggest display you can afford. Six months from now you will be happy you did. Then look at RAM, hard disk size, optical drive features (DVD, DVD-RW etc.) and extras (free printer etc.). Most laptops come with built-in wireless network so that should not be an issue.

The bottom line? Compare features/cost and go from there.

I like Toshiba. I have had that for almost a year and no problem with it.

The best laptop to get for a college student is HANDS DOWN the MacBook from Apple. It is not prone to viruses or spyware, it is sleek and stylish, it is easy to use, it has a built in webcam, and it has lots of power.

Any of those would be fine for college work. The key is to make sure they have at least 512MB RAM, a DVD drive, and built-in networking (ethernet).
