Americans who live in the northeastern part of the US are considered Yankees. There's lots of other names for people who live different regions of the US.

I still don't get why we're called Yankees or Yanks by foreign countries, when in America, that was the term used to describe northerners above the Mason-Dixon line during the Civil War...when did we ALL get to be Yankees? The only people now who are truly Yankees are those on NY's baseball team!!

Both. The Yanks are coming. Yankee Doodle Dandy. You can thank the British during the American Revolution for the nickname. (It was suppose to be an insult.)

"Yankees" is slang for Americans. It started as an insult against the settlers of New York. It meant "John Cheese" in Dutch. Why was this an insult? I have no idea. I just know that's where the word came from, people calling New Yorkers "John Cheese."

Although both are technically correct, if you start calling Americans "Yankees" they will look at you funny. In conversation, people use "Yanks" although it is true that it is used in Europe more than America.

I would not recommend calling someone from the southeastern part of the US a Yankee unless you want the crap beaten out fo you.

Yankees are born and raised in the part that was the North during the Civil War of 1861-65. This is STILL a sore spot for many in the southern areas of our country. So please be careful who you call a "Yankee"
