People are scared of some muslims, because some (a tiny, but very visible, minority) have very successfully hijacked islam for their own political ends. In doing so, they have inculcated into many people's lazy minds the idea that muslims are bloodthirsty and willing to kill in large numbers for their god, and are not scared of dying.
It really is lazy and sloppy thinking to equate the actions of a minority with the majority, but unfortunately many people do this. This isn't a phenomena solely of the the west, however. I've met quite a few people from throughout the world who comfort themselves by thinking in massively simplictic generalisations about all sorts of groups of people, e.g. westerners are decadent consumerists, black people have good rhythmn, the English can't cook, Americans are stupid, etc. etc.
The irony is that killing in the name of god betrays an complete lack of faith in that god, as surely he/she can look after themselves, if he/she did exist.

I think you give us in the west a little too much credit. We did not start Islam, we didn't start the fighting in the holy land, and last I checked we did not ask to be the victims of Fanatical terrorist attacks. Islam has been around since about 700 A.D, and shortly-thereafter, the fighting began. Muslims with Jews, Christians with Muslims, Christians with Jews. Now tell me, what was the west going through in that period of time? Western Europe anyway, a little thing called the Dark Ages. Anyway, I digress. People are not necessarily afraid of Muslims. We just think that the fanatics are a little off-the-wall, and can you blame us? They behead people in many Muslim countries, a bit barbaric if you ask me, but no one did. Also, its time to join the rest of the world in a little thing called Women's rights. Muslims are so afraid of women it is actually kinda funny. Which is exactly why the women are treated that way. Some of the men spend their whole lives trying to kill for "Allah" so they can get their 72 virgins, when their are plenty of what I am sure would be beautiful women in their own countries if they would let the women wear something other than full body gear, which has to be hot in those deserts anyway. Muslims don't frighten us, we just don't understand why a people would do what they do to themselves. It is a lack of understanding, but not fear.

Because they're associated largely with terrorism. terrorism is a very scary thing, 2 think that u can go 2 work n never c ur kids again / they'll grow up without a mum or dad / who'll look after them? since alot of muslims r associated with such a terrible thing it makes sence that alot of ppl r scared of the whole population of muslims. no offence any1 but i can understand y we'd b scared.
i can also c the point of an innocent muslim who has no intention of doing anything like this and just wants 2 get along. it can be very frustrating i suppose. (i say suppose cuz i'm not a muslim, i'm from the west (well england))

It's called 'manufacturing consent', and it means the government and media working together to build up a negative stereotype of a particular group of people in order to justify some future action against them.
In Britain, 'Islamaphobia' started with the press coverage of the Salmon Rushdie 'Satanic Verses' affair, where Muslims (both native and Middle eastern) were represented as violent, reactionary fundamentalists. This stereotype is now the predominant one presented in the media. The result of which is that Bush's war on Terror appears to be a defence of Western liberalism when in fact it is the start of American imperialism.

Probably because the only time the media shows Muslims, on the news or in films, they're terrorists. And because Americans as a rule don't travel enough to get these impressions balanced out by personal experience.

Because they generally view muslim as a whole. As they say 1 bad apple spoil the rest (or something like that). It not the muslim they should be afraid but the ideas of those idiotic bastard terriost who got nothing better to do but commit suicide everyday thinking they will go to heaven when their holy book say commiting suicide is a sin.

I'm not scared of muslims but I am scared of Islam and if we are not careful in the UK we are going to become an Islamic state so we had better fight back and get believing in something that is going to counterattack. Call me old fashioned but Christianity will do.

I don't understand why people are so scared of Muslims, they are just part of a religion, and they deserve to be treated the same as everyone else. It's only a tiny proportion of Muslims who abuse their religion and use it as an excuse to become terrorists.

I don't know anyone that is scared by Muslims. Your question is loaded and is deliberately attempting to provoke generalising answers. Before you ask I am not a Muslim. I am white and English but unlike you educated.
