Currently, a small minority of China uses oil. In fact, most cities burn COAL for power generation. Their air pollution is horrible because of this.

Eventually, populations will turn to more energy use. Not just cars, but heating, electric and other uses. This will be a competition burden to the USA demand that should drive the price up.

But good news is on the horizon. When gasoline reaches $5 per gallon, automakers will take fuel consumption seriously. I get 30 per gallon now, and look forward to 50 in the near future. I am seriously looking at the Toyota and Honda hybrid cars, but I want a 100,000 guarantee on the new unproved system.

Also, at $5 per gallon, ethanol will become a reality in the USA. Southern states will get into it. Northern states will eventually have DUAL systems, so they can switch to ethanol, once the car warms up.

The real answer is solar energy. This would be hydroelectric, tidal, wind power and others. A hydrogen based energy storage system would make the solar collection of energy more portable. Hydrogen based cars would not contribute to "green house gasses".

So is China our friend, or foe? Neither. We will finally become independent of Middle East Oil. But we should steer China toward using Solar energy also. We should be partners in developing oil free societies.

Yes it is getting to be a problem.
China is buying oil rights in the gulf of mexico ...just off Florida.
Places that have been off limits to drilling because of the fragile coastline.
If we were drilling for oil just of China's border, I think that it would have come to a head already.

Yes, as china gets more dependant the middle east will become as important to them as us. As the demand(and greed by wealthy oilers) gets bigger the more critical oil becomes.
