This may sound as though I'm being a smart aleck, but use the Internet.

First, the social websites--myspace, friendster, facebook, etc--are all very, very good ways to find lost friends. Very good. Very. Seriously, look for your friends there.

If that doesn't work, type the person's name into a search engine. Enclose their full name--first and last--in quotation marks, "John Smith". If that returns too many results, and it probably will, throw in some keywords (like hometown or colleges the person attended) to help narrow the search. You may want to start wit hthe most specific search phrase you can think of and then broaden to get more results.

Some of the people finders available through yahoo will give you limited results for free. These results include addresses and ages and may allow you to narrow your search t oa city or area.

If you can't find the person in one of those ways, try finding people who they knew and who may have seen your friend more recently.

Finally, don't neglect random chance. Yesterday on my way back from lunch--I almost never leave my office for lunch, mind you--I bumped into a friend from high school whom I have been looking for i nall the ways I mentioned above for 10 years.
