Similes to this question would be: Why are BMWs so expensive? Why is the Mona Lisa in the Louvre?

Gucci, and the rest of the high-end designer brands, are catering to people with large amounts of money. People with large amounts of money to burn don't want ordinary things, they want extremely high quality and original items. So, since they are willing to pay the price for an item with 1. the best possible materials and craftmanship and 2. an original design, the designers who make the item can make a profit and perhaps charge a "bit" more than what the item cost to make.

Putting their brand name on an item means that it was meticulously designed and planned by a certain fashion house that has spent decades refining and designing some of the best clothing and accessories money can buy.

Fashion is an art, and to design a line of clothing takes a lot of money, time and hard work. The art of a great designer becomes appreciated over time and with this appreciation comes higher price tags. A name like Gucci has become respected and desired all over the world.

The more people think that a label is expensive, the more the label can charge. The more the label can charge, the more people think that it is expensive. Eventually people start buying a certain label just because other people and the label itself say that it is expensive stuff. Buying something because it is expensive is very stupid. These are the people buying for status.

The ugly aspect of fashion comes into play when a person chooses a designer item for the sole purpose of displaying the name brand, hoping the brand will tote their status.

In respect of artist everywhere, DON'T BUY FOR STATUS! BUY FOR QUALITY, ORIGINALITY AND BUY THINGS YOU LOVE, REGARDLESS OF WHAT LABEL IS ON IT!

everyone knows who they are. same with marc jacobs, chanel, coach, etc. They're famous. here's something for you: Most people know where Iceland is, and they know its very pretty. But even so, they choose to visit Paris, instead of Iceland, because everyone knows where Paris is, and its a world icon. Now, most people know what the store Target it, and they know they have great deals on purses/bags. But even so, they choose to buy the one from Gucci, or Prada, etc, because its famous for being a pricy name brand, and everyone knows celebrities don't tote around a bag from Kohls, or Target! That is my point.
