a-squared + b-squared = c-squared, where a and b are the lengths of two sides and c is the hypotenuse.
1) To establish that an exisitng triangle has a 90-degree angle.
2) To construct a triangle with a 90-degree angle---usually to contruct a 90-degree angle--as in the building or gardening trades.

Its a long time since I did Pythagoras, but I believe its purpose was to enable the construction of right angled triangles of known size and angles.
