He could take the powerpoint and word exam but he would also need to take the Access, Excel, Basic Computing and Intro exams to get ECDL. Which is an exam that is not widely recognised or particually useful to obtain a job in IT, but then again he's only eight so he can take his time!

A+ is the industry standard, base certification for IT. It's the "janitor" of the IT ladder wrungs, if you will.
